AC/DC

AC/DC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap

AC/DC is a band so close to my heart it is only right that I discuss them to kick off this site.  My older brothers were big AC/DC fans(having grown up in seventies) and by the age of four(in 1981) Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap was my favorite album.  I used to sing the lyrics to the title track as I played with my lincoln logs.  However in my adolescent mind I warped the lyrics and “Dirty deeds and they’re done dirt cheap”  became “Dirty deeds and the done dirt jeep”.  Somehow I thought it was about a 4wd jeep doing mischievous things.  I didn’t realize the AC/DC circa 1979error of my ways until I learned to read years later.

Maybe it was because I thought my brothers were the coolest guys on the planet(and they were) but my love for AC/DC stuck with me.  Even years after that old Dirty Deeds LP was too warped to play I still kept I a special place in my heart for Angus’s crankin guitar licks and Bon Scott’s scratchy voice.  Over the years AC/DC has become a quintessential rock band.  Anyone who’s a fan of the rock scene of the late seventies/eighties knows AC/DC and most likely owns most of their catalog.

AC/DC was formed in Australia by two brothers Angus and Malcolm Young(transplants from Scottland)sometime around 1973.  For the first year multiple band members were swapped in and out but always keeping with Angus on lead guitar and Malcolm on rhythm guitar.  The first major addition to the band was Bon Scott on vocals (who was later replaced by Brian Johnson).  Soon after Mark Evans joined on bass and Phil Rudd joined on drums.  This was the first power lineup of AC/DC.

For me (and I think most people) AC/DC is split up into two eras. There is the  Bon Scott era and the Brian Johnson era.  Bon Scott was the lead signer from 1974 until is unfortunate death in 1980 .  Brian picked up where Bon left off in 1980 and has been the lead singer since.  In my opinion AC/DC’s golden age was with Bon Scott.  Every album that Bon Scott sang on is a fantastic rock wonderland from track to every last track.  You simply can’t go wrong with a Bon Scott album, the dude rocked.  That’s not to say Brian isn’t up to the task.  The first album Brian appeared on(Back in Black) rivals the Bon Scott album in rockness.  However I find that after that the Brian Johnson albums are more inconsistent.

The Bon Scott albums really were fantastic though.  Here’s a quick rundown of the major releases with Bon Scott at the microphone.  I love them all but I’ve starred my faves…

1) High Voltage (1976)*
2) Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (1976)
3) Let There Be Rock (1977)
4) Powerage (1978)
5) Highway to Hell (1979)*

The Brian albums as I said are hit and miss but here they are and I’ve starred my faves…

1) Back in Black (1980)*
2) For Those About to Rock (We Salute You) (1981)
3) Flick of the Switch (1983)
4) Fly on the Wall (1985)
5) Who Made Who (1986)
6) Blow Up Your Video (1988)
7) The Razors Edge (1990)*
8) Ballbreaker (1995)
9) Stiff Upper Lip (2000)
10) Black Ice (2008)

So yea, AC/DC is a fantastic hard rock band especially in their early years.  Anyone new to or interested in the hard rock world should definitely explore their recordings.
